1st National Blue Carbon Symposium
20-21 September 2018 - Dr. McGlone, Mary and MJ attended the 1st National Blue Carbon Symposium held at the Philippine Red Cross Logistics and Training Center, Subic Freeport Zone, Zambales on Sept 20-21, 2018. They presented their poster entitled “Exploring correlations in estimates of carbon from mangrove leaves and soil in Aklan Eco-Parks”.
IAMBlueCECAM Program Workshop
23-24 July 2018 - The IAMBlueCECAM Program conducted a program-wide planning workshop which aimed to integrate he data collected for year one, address concerns for the different projects and create initial plans for year two (IAMBluCECAM 2.0). Part also in the activity was a team building capacity for everyone involved in the program.
The Effects of Climate Change in World's Oceans: 4th International Symposium
4-8 June 2018 - Mary presented her study entitled "Temporal variability of carbonate parameters in Guiguiwanen Channel, Bolinao, Pangasinan” at The Effects of Climate Change in World’s Oceans: 4th International Symposium in Washington Hilton, Washington, D.C. Main objective of the symposium is to gather experts to discuss the impacts of climate change in the ocean's ecosystem and the appropriate actions to address this problem.
4th Asia-Pacific Coral Reef Symposium
4-8 June 2018 - Dr. Maria Lourdes San Diego-McGlone presented a poster entitled "Variations of carbonate and water quality parameters in Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) sites in the Philippines" at the 4th Asia-Pacific Coral Reef Symposium held in Marco Polo Hotel, Cebu City.
Philippine Rise Commemoration Rites
15-17 May 2018 - The Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory together with other colleagues of UP MSI attended the commemoration rites of renaming Benham Rise to Philippines Rise to emphasize the country's sovereignty rights.
3rd SCESAP Biodiversity Symposium
4-9 December 2017 - Dr. Cha Ferrera attended the 3rd SCESAP Biodiversity Symposium with the theme "Biodiversity in Adversity: Asian and Global Perspectives" which was held in Cebu, Philippines. She presented her paper entitled "Carbon dioxide sources and sinks in Philippine water and first estimate of ocean acidification in the Sulu Sea, Philippines".
4th IOC-WESTPAC Ocean Acidification Workshop
14-15 Decemeber 2017 - Dr. McGlone attended the 4th IOC-WESTPAC workshop on Research and Monitoring the Ecological Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reefs at the Phuket Marine Biological Center.
Practical Training Course on Ocean Acidification
30 October - 3 November 2017 - Dr. Ferrera and Ms. Lagumen attended a practical training course on ocean acidification in Suva, Fiji supported by the United States Department of State, the Swedish International Development Agency, the X-PRIZE Foundation, the Commonwealth Marine Economics Programme and Ocean Foundations. The objective of the workshop is to expand the capacity of scientists and resource managers to monitor, understand, and respond to ocean acidifcation in their region.
ARMS for Reef Cryptobiodiversity and Ocean Acidification Workshops
October - November 2017 - As part of the objectives of the ARMS project, Dr. Ferrera, Mary Lagumen and the rest of ARMS Philippines Team, held training and lectures on reef cryptobiodiversity and ocean acidification in Batangas, Zambales, Tuguegarao and Surigao. The workshop focused on the deployment and retrieval of ARMS with series of lectures about ocean acidification and reef biodiversity.
Climate Change And Marine Ecosystems Summer Workshop
17 - 21 July 2017 - Mary Chris Lagumen attended a croucher summer course in partnership with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology last July 17 - 21, 2017. The objective of the summer course is to provide young scientists with deeper knowledge on the impacts of global climate change and the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide in ocean ecosystems which may lead to ocean warming, ocean acidification and hypoxia.
14th National Symposium on Marine Science
13 - 15 July 2017 - The Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory members attended and presented their research works at the 14th National Symposium in Marine Science hosted by the Philippine Association of Marine Science in Chateau de Royale, Nasugbu, Batangas.
Hands-On-ARMS
6 July 2017 - Dr. Cha Ferrera, Mikhael Tanedo and Jay Burce participated in Hands-On-ARMS, an outreach activity organized by the DENR BMB for elementary students around the municipality of Mabini, Batangas. Students and teachers were given a lecture on biodiversity and were shown the diversity of marine organisms attached onto the Autonomous Reef Monitoring System (ARMS) retrieved from Twin Rocks Reef. Exposure to HOA will help in the planning of the retrieval and processing activities by the project on biodiversity and ocean acidification.
World Oceans Day: Our Ocean, Our Future
8 June 2017 - Dr. Maria Lourdes San Diego-McGlone was a resource speaker in the World Oceans Day "Out of the Blue Lectures" at the National Museum. The title of her talk was "Climate change is affecting our oceans".
ARMS Training
5 June 2017 - As part of the objective of the DENR project headed by Dr. McGlone, they organized a training on Autonomous Reef Monitoring System (ARMS) for some local government units in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. This training tackles the planning on the deployment, retrieval and processing activities of ARMS in their area and discusses the concept of marine biodiversity and ocean acidification.
NAST Luzon Regional Scientific Meeting
15-16 May 2017 - Dr. Maria Lourdes San Diego-McGlone was a plenary speaker at the NAST Luzon Regional Scientific Meeting under the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting with the theme "Attaining Sustainable Development Goals: Philippine Fisheries and Other Aquatic Resources 20/20" held at the CAP John Hay Convention Center in Baguio City. Dr. McGlone's talk was on "Water quality issues linked to fish production". The discussants were Ms. Adelina Santos-Borja of LLDA and Dr. Rico Ancog of SESAM, UPLB.
IOCWESTPAC Scientific Conference in China
17-21 April 2017 - The Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory attended the 10th IOC WESTPAC Scientific Conference with the theme, “Advancing Ocean Knowledge, Fostering Sustainable Development: From the Indo-Pacific to the Globe. This conference was organized by the First Institute of Oceanography, SOA, China and the IOC Sub-Commission which promotes opportunity for marine scientists in the region for interactive discussions and possible collaborations. The conference was held in Qingdao, China. Each member of the lab presented his/her study and attended workshops.
Aquatic Sciences Meeting
3 March 2017 - Dr. Charissa Ferrera attended the Aquatic Sciences Meeting at the Hawai`i Convention Center last February 26 to March 3, 2017. The conference was arranged by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO). She presented a paper entitled “Evaluation of phosphate sources and cycling in a tropical coastal ecosystem using phosphate oxygen isotopes”, which is part of her dissertation research. During the conference, she met experts on phosphorus biogeochemistry who gave good advice on her presentation. As part of understanding Hawaiian culture and resource management, she also participated in tours arranged by the conference organizers. These include volunteering at the He`eia fishpond workday and joining the Waikiki and Ala Wai Canal Watershed field trip.
Marine Carbon from Space (SatCO2): Joint Science Training Workshop
16 December 2016 – Mary Chris Lagumen attended the Marine Carbon from Space (SatCO2): Joint Science Training Workshop held in Hangzhou, China last December 12-16, 2016. The workshop served as a venue for interdisciplinary interactions and cooperation for scientists with interests on using and developing satellite algorithms for biogeochemical parameters. The workshop includes oral presentations from different researchers and a hands-on training both in remote sensing and biogeochemistry.
Second Invention Disclosure Awarding Cermony
25 November 2016 - The 2nd Invention Disclosure Incentive awarding ceremony was held at the Executive House, UP Diliman. One of seventeen inventions that were given recognition was developed by Professor Emeritus Rhodora Azanza, Dr. Maria Lourdes San Diego-McGlone, Paul Rodgers, Peter Paolo Rivera, Iris Orizar, and Marlon Banal. This invention is a device for the control of tropical Harmful Algal blooms under the HABTech Project. Invention disclosures are handled by the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO), which is under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

International Workshop on China-ASEAN Ocean Acidification Network
3 September 2016 – Mary Chris Lagumen was a participant in a workshop on China-ASEAN Ocean Acidification Network held in Xiamen, China last September 1-2, 2016. This workshop was organized by the Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration in China.
Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) Workshop
10 May 2016 – Mary Chris Lagumen attended the 3rd Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) Workshop held in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia last May 8-10, 2016. With researchers from over 25 nations working to understand the harmful effects of ocean acidification, the GOA-ON workshop aims on furthering the development of a coordinated network for the detection of ocean acidification and ecosystem responses.
13th National Symposium on Marine Science
22-24 October 2015 - The Marine Biogechemistry Laboratory attended and presented papers at the 13th National Symposium on Marine Science with the theme "Moving Toward Resilient Marine Ecosystems" held at the Green Leaf Hotel, General Santos City. The symposium was organized by the Philippine Association of Marine Science (PAMS) which aims in promoting growth of marine science in the country, and recognizes the important role of Philippine scientists in furthering knowledge on tropical marine ecosystems.
European Workshop on Practical introduction to marine monitoring hardware and procedures
17 September 2015 – Mary Chris Lagumen participated in the European Workshop on Practical introduction to marine monitoring hardware and procedures funded by the European project FixO3, Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale. The workshop was held in Trieste Italy last September 15-17, 2015. The workshop provided platform for researchers to gain working knowledge on the challenges in ocean monitoring and to work with instrument, calibration practices and operational protocol for the determination of some key parameters which includes temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH and pCO2.
